Senior centers are
places where older adults can gather together to make new friends and
attend activities. Programs usually vary according to the centers,
with most offering outreach programs, health screenings and counseling
and a variety of educational, fitness and volunteer programs. Some
centers may charge a small annual membership fee.
Congregate meal
sites
Most congregate
meal sites also serve as group meal locations. Most are funded by the
Older Americans Act (0AA) and are intended for individuals 60 and
older, to provide at least one nutritionally balanced meal on
weekdays, usually at noontime. Advanced meal order reservations are
usually required at some of the senior centers. OAA congregate meal
programs encourage a voluntary donation. Others (not OOA) charge fees
which usually vary from center to center. Some senior
centers/congregate meal sites are located in senior apartment
buildings, churches or community centers. Transportation may be
available to many of these sites.
Home delivered
meals
Most senior
centers also offer home delivered meals for seniors 60 and older who
are homebound, need help preparing meals and have no means of
attaining a complete meal. The hot meal is balanced to provide one
third of the daily recommended requirements, and some centers can
provide supplemental frozen meals for evenings and or weekends.
Senior centers are the contacts and providers of home delivered
